Grafting a Toe without a Darning needle.
Darn, you've finished a toe on the bus, an a white sandy beach on vacation, or anywhere else where you don't have access to a darning needle.
Well in my case it was while I was dogsitting and I didn't want to drive 30 minutes just to get a darning needle.
All you need is your sock on two needles and one more needle from the set that you were making your socks on.
First thing you need to know, the pictures here are small but if you click on them, you'll be directed to the Flickr site where you can see them much larger (to the point where you can become well aquainted with my left index finger.)
Second, there are 21 pictures here so if you have dial-up or any other slower connection this will take some time to load, but I thought it best to have it this detailed with the instructions.
First, cut your working yarn, leaving a 12 inch tail with which to work with.
Set up front needle: Knit the first stitch...
...pull the strand through, leave worked stitch on left-hand needle.
Set up back needle: purl...
...pull strand through, leave worked stitch on left-hand needle.
Step 1 (front needle): purl...
...pull strand through...
...slip off worked stitch.
Step 2 (front needle): knit...
...pull strand through, leave worked stitch on left-hand needle.
Step 3 (back needle): knit...
...pull strand through...
...slip off worked stitch.
Step 4 (back needle): purl...
...pull strand through, leave worked stitch on left-handed needle.
Repeat Steps 1-4 across toe.
On the last front stitch: purl...
...pull strand through...
...slip off worked stitch.
Last stitch on back needle: knit...
...pull strand through, slip needle off stitch.
Tighten any loose stitches and finish by weaving in ends as usual.
I've made this as clear as I've seen possible so if you have any questions or if this is confusing, or even if you've found an error please feel free to contact me at ladyneaknitsalot AT yahoo DOT com and I'll get back to you and/or fix it as soon as possible.
Hope this helps someday!
